Choosing the most suitable type of lawn is one of the most important steps to have a healthy and lush garden.
Of course, the choice depends primarily on the effect we want to achieve: elegant, colorful, rustic.
In addition, you must consider some characteristics of the garden such as sun exposure, temperature, humidity, soil composition etc.
Choosing the most appropriate type of lawn, cultivating and maintaining a healthy and lush garden can become a rather simple and relaxing activity.
In fact, most types of lawn on the market require little maintenance.
The English-style lawn
The English-style lawn has a very homogeneous, elegant and refined look.
Its name comes from the fact that it is widespread in Anglo-Saxon countries as a coating in parks, sports fields and green areas of all kinds.
The grass of the English-style lawn grows rather quickly and is quite resistant, but requires a humid climate and fairly cool temperatures.
The most common species are the Festuca arundinacea or, for the warmer zones, the Poa pratensis.
The walkable lawn
The walkable lawn usually consists of a set of robust and evergreen species, suitable to withstand intense pedestrian traffic.
Being rather heterogeneous compounds, its installation requires some important measures.
For example, careful soil preparation, proper seeding, and an appropriate irrigation cycle are required.
Instead, when the grass has taken root, it will be sufficient to perform ordinary maintenance.
One of the easiest blends to grow includes Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and a small part of Festuca rubra.
The rustic meadow
The rustic meadow consists of species with very resistant stems and a particularly robust root system.
Its appearance makes it particularly suitable for decorating gardens of manors and country residences, characterized by a rural aesthetic.
From a practical point of view, it can be used in play areas for children or, thanks to its deep roots that make the soil more compact, to cover slopes.
The rustic meadow can be realized with various species of Festuca, with the Bermuda grass or, in case of particularly arid or saline soils, with the Zoysia japonica.
The flowered grass
The flowered grass has a general aesthetic less uniform than other decorative solutions, but retains the joyful and natural appearance of a wild lawn.
Generally it is formed by compact and strong blades of grass, and very robust roots.
For this reason, it is often used in public areas, and keeps its beauty unchanged even when it is subject to a certain trampling.
Its rich and variegated coat is obtained with a mix of seeds of annual and perennial plants, including the Poa pratensis and the English Loietto.
The shady lawn
The shady lawn is made with herbaceous species that can perform their vital functions even in the absence of direct light.
Thanks to this feature, with proper maintenance, it can be successfully cultivated in wooded gardens or green spaces surrounded by buildings.
In fact, due to the lack of light or the sharing of the earth with the trees, the lawn in the shade is subject to a natural thinning.
For this, it is necessary to fertilize the soil, often collect the leaves, trample the grass as little as possible and never cut it too short.
In addition, you need to irrigate carefully: a lawn in the shade needs less water than a lawn in the sun.
The blends to create a lawn in the shade are numerous, and the most indicated contain a high percentage of fine Festuca (30 to 60%).
