Weeks before spring are one the best time to start the preparation of the soil of our garden to the sowing. In fact, starting in this period, vegetables and fruit trees will reach full maturity in summer when, thanks to higher temperatures, will offer a more abundant harvest.
Although it is a bit tiring, preparing the vegetable garden for sowing is a satisfying activity because it allows us to express all the potential of our green thumb.
Till the soil
The first step is to loosen the earth that, having been exposed to the weather of the cold months, will surely be compacted.
Some tools such as spades, rakes or picks, depending on the size and characteristics of the soil, are indispensable to carry out this practice correctly. It is also very important to wear a pair of gardening gloves and of course suitable shoes.
This operation has a fundamental function: to ensure that the roots of the plants we intend to cultivate can develop without difficulty.
Clear the ground
During the winter, it is very likely that weeds have proliferated in our soil.
After moving the earth, it is necessary to remove them all, paying particular attention to their roots. In fact, if they are not eliminated completely, in a short time they will return to steal oxygen and nourishment from our crops.
For disposal, we can use a container for compost.
In addition, since this phase serves to make the soil more easily cultivable, it is necessary to eliminate as many stones as possible.
Some can be used as ornaments, or to delimit flowerbeds or paths.
Fertilize
In many cases, it may be useful to incorporate fertiliser to improve the supply of soil nutrients.
Depending on the characteristics of the soil and crops, we can use dry or fresh fertilisers, such as compost or manure, that make the soil softer and able to retain moisture.
Crumble the earth
After dissolving, cleaning and fertilising our soil, we must crush and crumble the clods produced by the initial tillage.
This activity has a significant influence on the success of sowing and cultivation operations and, therefore, on the goodness and abundance of the harvest.
This is why we need to make the soil as brittle as possible.
Organize the spaces of the garden
The last preparatory phase consists in the subdivision of our vegetable garden in various areas of appropriate size to the cultivated plants, adequately spaced, and separated by paths and passage zones.
Even if it is physically less demanding than the others, it is equally important because it will condition the time and the ease with which we can dedicate ourselves to the cultivation and harvesting of the products of our garden.
First of all, we need to consider some aspects such as sun exposure, shady areas and possible slopes that affect irrigation.
Based on these characteristics, we will divide the garden into zones and trace the grooves of the right depth, or create mounds, to sow or bury our seedlings.
These housings should be suitably spaced, bearing in mind the size of the plants when they reach maturity. In fact, two plants that sprout too close, stand in each other’s way and will hardly grow luxuriant and healthy.
