Autumn is one of the best times to dedicate yourself to the plants and flowers of your balcony. Taking care of the green in these months is a way to respond positively to the melancholy and greyness of the cold winter evenings now upon us.

In addition, in this period many flowers and plants with warm and intense colors flourish, despite the increasingly lower temperatures.

Ornamental cabbage

The ornamental cabbage is one of the easiest plants to cultivate, as it resists to the temperature changes and does not fear the cold, even below zero.

It needs a capacious pot and an always humid soil, but not too wet. During the hottest days it is advisable to put it in the shade, while when it is colder, you need to move it to the sun.

Combined with a small berry bush, it creates a wild corner on the balcony.

Hawthorn and juniper

Hawthorn and juniper are plants with intense red or bright pink berries and have great ornamental value. They are evergreen shrubs that resist well to the cold months and need little care.

These beautiful berries can be used to create compositions with which you can decorate any home environment.

Herbs

Although the aromatic herbs such as basil, rosemary, sage, have the scent and taste of the warmer seasons, it is very easy to grow them at home even during the autumn months.

It is enough to keep them in jars on a shelf or on the windowsill of the sunniest window, and during the less windy days they can also stay in the balcony.

Chrysanthemum

This flower is native to Japan and has many varieties with different aesthetic and physiological characteristics. Many chrysanthemums are suitable for cultivation in pot, and give splendid blooms even in the coldest months.

They require only a regular fertilization and a fairly large pot on the bottom of which is placed some clay or gravel for a proper drainage.

Available in many colours, from white to yellow to orange, it helps to purify the air of the room and in the Far East it has always been considered a symbol of nobility.

Cyclamen

Cyclamen are typical autumn flowers, which reach full bloom just with the first cold. They are perfect for decorating the window sill with joy, but in case of snow or cold, you need to put them away.

Another small precaution is to ensure that the earth remains humid, but without water stagnating. In spring, they wither naturally, but the following autumn their bulbs can be transferred to sprout again.

Ivy and pansy

Some autumn plants are particularly suitable for delicious decorations.

For example, ivy, a strong and tenacious climbing plant, an ancient symbol of fidelity, during the cold season becomes the protagonist of centerpieces and garlands thanks to its intense green color.

Or the pansy, a plant with a very long flowering that begins in autumn and resists even the winter cold.

Plants like these can be used to decorate the house in a natural, sober and elegant way, intertwined with each other, or tied in small bundles with twine or a colored ribbon.
