A vegetable garden is not indispensable for the cultivation of aromatic plants. You too can create your own fragrant green corner by following some tricks and choosing the most suitable point of your home.

Growing your favorite aromatic plants at home has at least three advantages:

  • The right amount of green makes every environment more beautiful, cozy and relaxing
  • Potted plants scent and purify the stuffy air of the apartments
  • You will always have fresh and genuine flavor at your fingertips for your dishes.

In addition, growing aromatic plants at home is quite simple: it requires little space, little time and rather common tools.

What you need to grow aromatic plants at home

Pots and saucers

The first thing you need are pots and saucers of appropriate size and characteristics.

Polyethylene vases are the most versatile, practical and ecological solution: in fact, you can find them in every shape and color and therefore they can be easily integrated with the aesthetics of your environment; moreover, they are lightweight, easily washable and unbreakable; finally, if you are sensitive to environmental issues, they are 100% recyclable.

Contents of the pot

To see your aromatic plants grow properly, you will need to fill your pot with:

  • A layer of expanded clay, to be placed on the bottom of the pot to allow a gradual release of soil moisture.
  • The right amount of so-called universal soil mixed with some sand for a better draining effect;
  • A bit of fertilizer specific for the plant, to keep the soil fertile over time.

Tools and equipment

The perfect kit to treat your aromatic plants at home is very simple to make. A shovel and a pair of gloves are enough to easily carry out the small operations of repotting, a watering can of the right size and a pair of scissors to remove any dry leaves or take what you need without damaging the plants.

The best places to grow your own aromatic plants

Each apartment, small or large, offers different possibilities for growing aromatic plants.

The best places are those abundantly illuminated and away from sources of artificial heat, such as radiators and air conditioners.

Shelves in the kitchen

Since the final use of aromatic plants is the kitchen, this is the most suitable environment to dedicate a corner or wall sufficiently free to a shelf or a stick to rest or suspend the vases.

In addition to making the environment more pleasant and original, you will always have at your fingertips your favorite aromas.

The windowsill of a window

It is the perfect solution for those who have very little space in the house. By placing the pots on a window sill, your plants will always be exposed to light and grow healthy, strong and lush. Moreover, it is a very comfortable place, because it does not force you to bend down to pick up what you need.

The balconies or the terraces

Having a sufficiently large balcony or a terrace to dedicate to the cultivation of your favorite aromatic plants is a fortune, but requires some extra attention. In fact, you need to make sure it’s not too exposed to rain and wind or too hot or cold temperatures.

If you have plenty of space you can place your plants on the floor, in large pots. Otherwise, free your imagination and choose a common vertical solution as a shelf, a ladder or a system of trays.

Growing aromatic plants at home does not require special measures: with a bit of goodwill, enthusiasm and love for plants, you will get really amazing results!
